The article focuses on the book "Nicaragua: Revolution in the Family," by Shirley Christian. Americas Watch, the human rights monitoring group, spent a month this summer negotiating for a private meeting with UNO, the newly unified leadership of the Nicaraguan contras. The purpose was to discuss UNO's decision to establish a human rights commission to study charges of abuses by contra troops. Christian expressed the opinion and this view resurfaces in Nicaragua--that Somoza was judged too harshly. His bad press was the penalty he paid for running a relatively open society.
