The article provides information about films nominated for Academy Awards in the U.S. The film "Amadeus," showed the way a bunch of bewigged neurotics lived in eighteenth-century Vienna. The film "The Killing Fields," presented everyday life in the Cambodian charnel house. The film "Places in the Heart," was a fantasy of rural community in the Depression South The film "A Soldier's Story," cut a thin slice of black barracks life in World War II Louisiana, and "A Passage to India," was about this elephant. Each of the films, in its way, was elegantly executed, richly detailed and well acted.
