The article presents information about the corporate crimes and corporate bureaucracy in the U.S. Organization theory explains how a complex bureaucracy can take on a life of its own-and how the individuals who work there will do nearly anything to defend and promote it. Since the marketplace is an uncertain place, often the only way to assure stability is to control market forces, which can mean conspiring with competitors or juggling the books. So when managers come under pressure from superiors to meet certain goals, they may choose illegality over failure. The isolation of top managers in large corporations from both the marketplace and employees also contributes to the potential for illegal behavior.
