The article reflects on the life and legacy of former Chilean president Salvador Allende. His positive contributions to history and attempts to transform the concepts of revolution, socialism and democracy remain unrecognized, or misunderstood. Allende believed profoundly in the principle that real socialism would bring with it an expansion and deepening of democracy, not its curtailment or abolition. He carried out the nationalization of copper mines and 200 major corporations, a land reform that expropriated monopoly holdings, and other measures that benefited and empowered the poor.
