The article reflects on the political situation in Chile in light of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. The Chilean military staged a successful coup on September 11, 1973 against the constitutional government of its president Salvador Allende, who was trying to build socialism through peaceful and electoral means. Some of the civil rights of U.S. citizens have been curtailed, as well as the rights of non-U.S. citizens inside the borders of the U.S.
