The article focuses on the national publicity tour launched by Attorney General John Ashcroft to promote the U.S. Patriot Act. Ashcroft is trying to talk up the Patriot Act through a publicity tour and a new Web site. He aims to correct the myths surrounding the Act and touts the success in the war on terrorism. Ironically, Ashcroft's national tour will not address the public. His speaking engagements are all before closed audiences, primarily law-enforcement officers. But his tactic is backfiring as the public oppose the Act for fear that their civil liberties will be lost at the hands of the Administration.
