The article focuses on the implications of the September 9 tax-reform vote in Alabama. The tax reform vote will affect Amendment One which authorizes a $1.2 billion revenue-raising package of money for education, healthcare and job training. Its approval would signify the first step toward overhauling the state tax structure. The tax reform is instigated by Republican Governor Bob Riley who criticized the system for taxing family with lower income but cannot generate money from corporations and upper-bracket taxpayers to fund public schools, nursing homes, prisons and other state services. His crusade, however, has angered former supporters and divide the party members.
