This article reflects on a lawsuit filed on behalf of veterans against the U.S. Department of Defense following the discovery of drums in Fort Greely, Alaska leaking a toxic solvent used to neutralize highly lethal chemical weapons. The lawsuit and the release of previously classified documents are weakening the efforts of the department to hide this chapter of military history. It is now clear that a 19,000-acre reserve was created by the Army in 1952 for the explicit purpose of testing deadly chemical and biological weapons.
