When people in the Dominican Republic try to explain the lighthouse to foreigners, they refer most often to the Statue of Liberty. It's an apt comparison, in that both monuments say a lot about the countries they have come to symbolize. Of course, the lighthouse is a good symbol for the Dominican Republic in other, more immediate ways. It is without doubt the most elaborate and exorbitant of Dominican leader and current President Joaquín Balaguer's famous construction projects, which he has been using for years to give the impression--both to Dominicans and to foreign aid donors--that the Dominican economy is in good health.
