The war in Liberia, in which rival rebel forces led by Charles Thylor and Prince Johnson have been trying to destroy each other and overthrow the regime of President Samuel Kanyon Doe, has turned into a nightmare for that small West African nation's civilian population. Ethnicity is an important factor in perhaps half of the thirty or so wars now under way around the world, including those in Sri Lanka, Burma, several parts of India, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Turkey. Many more countries suffer from violent conflict, short of actual warfare, along ethnic lines. Although it would be a mistake to suggest that there is a single explanation for the worldwide explosion of ethnic violence, the Liberian case is instructive.
