The article focuses on the Lenore Marshall poetry prize. The Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize of $10,000, awarded annually for the most outstanding book of poems published in the U.S. is sponsored by the New Hope Foundation. Michael Ryan's three books of poetry have followed one another at a fairly deliberate pace. In Ryan's two earlier books that prepares one for the flexibility and variety of speech found in the new poems, although there were hints of those qualities in the last two sections of "In Winter."
