The article focuses on two books titled "The Safe Sea of Women: Lesbian Fiction 1969-1989," by Bonnie Zimmerman and "Lesbian Texts and Contexts: Radical Revisions," edited by Karla Jay and Joanne Glasgow. In the book titled "The Safe Sea of Women," Zimmerman describes an alternative literature that began to appear in the late 1960s with the women's and gay liberation movements that was then fueled by the development of a specifically lesbian feminist politics and the appearance of independent feminist and lesbian journals and presses. In explicit contrast to "that outcast world," this new lesbian writing offered the promise of a self-consciously affirmative community.
