The article presents the social and political development in Saudi Arabia. Private belief is one thing, public behavior is something very different. If fifty of Saudi Arabia's most prominent families have decided to make their private dissatisfaction public by endorsing the drive-in, they obviously have very serious reasons for it. The American press has suggested that these women were emboldened to assert their right to drive cars by the example of American women soldiers and the presence of American reporters. But women's driving has been discussed in Saudi Arabia for at least the past ten years.
