The article discusses the newfound status of Canada as Hippie Nation, as a result of their cutting-edge laws on gay marriage and legalized drugs. Public opinion polls show that Canadians are becoming more forward-looking and groovier, while the U.S. is lurching backward, retrenching into more conservative values. Several factors contributed to Canada's newfound status. The first was the decision of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien to not support the U.S.-British invasion of Iraq. Another significant factor is the introduction of legislation by the Chrétien government to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana and the legalization of gay marriage.
