We applaud the United States Postal Service's decision to cancel its plan to end Saturday mail delivery. When the USPS first announced the change in late March, The Nation’s John Nichols was quick to connect the plan to cynical attempts to privatize the Constitutionally-protected service, while Nation readers joined communities protesting across the country and sent more than 2,000 messages to their representatives urging them to act. Congress responded to the outcry and came out against the change, eventually prompting USPS to cancel it. As Nichols points out, the reversal is not just a victory for the rural communities, small business owners and elderly and disabled people who would have been most severely affected by the change. It stands as “an important reminder that it matters to mobilize against the austerity agenda, even when the odds are daunting."
